You’re looking radiant today… Stud.

20 May '11

Ah, the good old days. These are Nutex radium condoms from the 1920′s. Yes, radium condoms. You know how well radioactive materials protect you from gonorrhea, herpes, babies and other diseases. Plus you get glow in the dark junk. It’s a win-win. Except your junk will fall out after a few uses. Pun intended .

Ditching cable

18 Apr '11

I’m sick and tired of playing their dirty games. First it was Comcast, then it was U-verse and finally Directv.  I’m done. I don’t want to call them every couple of months and ask why my bill jumped by 10-100%. Basic cable with HGTV, BBC and the Food Network was working out to $120 before rebates.

Ah yes, sweet sweet rebates. How you lure us in. The first one is free or severely discounted and then as the bill continues to mount, we get lazy and don’t bother. We are the same people who will drive a couple of miles out of the way to buy gas 5c cheaper.

Have you wondered how to cut the cable? It’s easy. It’s shockingly easy.

Recently I bought a PS3. It’s a fantastic gaming console with some of my favorite games on it. Plus, it’s a great media center. I started off by streaming music from my laptops. Worked great. Then I tried movies… perfect. Got Netflix setup and some of the content is low def and it’s ok, but not unwatchable. We watched Dexter and Damages and it was awesome. Oh, and a bluray drive is the cherry on this pie.

The last big step I took, was to get a trial subscription of Hulu Plus, which is normally $8/month. I’ve been watching my usual shows Daily Show, Colbert Report, 30 Rock etc a day late or so, but I did that on with my DVR anyway. Quality is HD and no complaints so far.

About $100 a year isn’t bad at all. Plus I take it with me if I want to. Laptop, phone and Tricia’s future tablet. Good stuff overall.

TL;DR; I replaced our Wii, Cable Box/DVR & DVD player with a PS3 and saved over $1000/year

Oh, what do I miss? Background noise while I write on the blog, fold . Right now, Foo Fighters on Jon Stewart.

Just sat through another earthquake

18 Apr '11

Working at home because something knocked me out over the weekend and I’m still in recovery mode. I’m typing out an email to one of the developers on my team and I hear this loud boom, the ground shakes, the window panes rattle, the house creaks and then… a lot of birds start chirping.

It happened really close to home. Small, but close. The epicenter was near Sweeney Ridge and we live in San Mateo.

Going Tom Sawyer on them

01 Apr '11

That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped nibbling his apple. Tom swept his brush daintily back and forth – stepped back to note the effect – added a touch here and there – criticized the effect again – Ben watching every move and getting more and more interested, more and more absorbed. Presently he said: “Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”

Rather than force the kids to help with chores, we make it fun and competitive. Here in this gallery, Arjun is helping me fold the laundry and helping put it away as fast as he can. Happily. I wonder how long I can go Tom Sawyer on them before they wise up.

The men in blue

31 Mar '11

So, you’ve probably heard tons about India and Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup finals. No? Well, you must be American :)

Today, Tricia picked Eve up from school and on NPR they were talking about India beating Pakistan and the fact the Indians will be meeting Sri Lankans in the finals. Eve is listening very carefully. Here is the conversation that ensued.

Eve: Mama, you know what?

Tricia: What?

Eve: India and Sri Lanka will be playing the next match.

Tricia: I know, baba is very excited

Eve: Me too, but it’s going to be difficult

Tricia: What will be difficult?

Eve: The Indians wear blue and the Sri Lankans wear blue. And… they both look the same. I will not know which team is which.

Tricia: *silence*

I am pretty certain Tricia has no idea what the Sri Lankan colors are. Eve is a smart and observant little girl. She picks everything up very fast. Whenever we meet people called Michael, she says oh like Michael Krasny or when she meets Peters, she goes, oh I know a Peter, his name is Peeeeter Segaaaal.

Now for your viewing pleasure here are a couple of pictures.

This is the Indian team winning against the Pakistanis

Tomorrow is backwards day!

31 Mar '11

From Eve’s teacher:

Goodbye Everyone,

Hopefully all of the April calendars made it home safely… in case your child hasn’t told you yet: TOMORROW is Backwards Day! This in not an April Fool’s joke!

During today’s ending circle we discussed possibilities of what one could do tomorrow: Clothes backwards, shoes on the wrong feet, underwear on your head and YES chocolate in your child’s lunch box!  Well the possibilities are endless!

Needles to say, the children were excited and so are we!

Hello,

Judith and Carol

This. Is. Awesome.

Dead Drops

‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are embedded into walls, buildings and curbs accessible to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures.

The closest one to me is at 82 2nd st, San Francisco California

This. Is. Awesome.

Karachi Rose: A new cocktail to celebrate the India/Pak semifinal

26 Mar '11

From the 19th of February, I’ve watched pretty much every game of the ICC World Cup. After all these matches, both India and Pakistan have made it to the semi finals. And they are going to play each other in Mohali. India is issuing upwards of 5000 visas to Pakistanis who’d like to attend, which is fantastic. Considered as one of the most intense sports rivalries in the world, defeat is usually unacceptable to fans of both teams. End of the day it’s just cricket and some team will win. Regardless, the match will likely be electrifying. I wish I could be there.

To celebrate this match I created a new cocktail that I will call “Karachi rose”. The Karachi connection is Rooh Afza, a popular drink with the Indian Muslim community. This drink comes from Karachi, Pakistan and is available across the Indian Subcontinent. I’ve seen it at most Indian stores in the bay area for about $3. This cocktail is based on the Shanghai Rose, which uses more eastern Asian ingredients.

This cocktail has intense flavors with the lemon juice and the Rooh Afza; topped off with the aromatic rosemary. It makes a great anytime drink.

Recipe:

  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 1/2 oz Rooh Afza
  • 1 1/2 oz Vodka
  • small sprig of rosemary
  • pinch of salt

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with a few cubes of ice. Pour into an old fashioned glass. Fill it up the rest of the way with sparking water.

Enjoy it with kababs.
