Camping at Del Valle

25 Jul '10

Another camping trip. This time with the Deepa, Deepak, Madhur, Jai and Armaan. This was Jai and Armaan’s first time camping.

Del Valle is a regional park in the East Bay. I’d never heard of this place. We drive up Friday early evening and get stuck in rush hour traffic. After Livermore, the rest of the drive was quite nice, winding through hills. As we pull into the park, I see the folks camped around. Most of them very trashy, trailer park type folks. Very different from the other parks in the area. Our campsite was HUGE, but there was one solitary tree. And it was going to be HOT the next couple of days.

Deepa and Deepak get there a bit later and we set up our tents. Deepak made a fantastic salad and Tricia had brought some her brilliant home baked bread. Paired with some wine and marshmallows, we had a really good time. The next morning we got our act together and headed off to the boat jetty/dock. The Malkanis hadn’t yet arrived and we really wanted to rent a kayak, so Deepa/k rented a 2 person rig and we rented a quad. I had no idea that we could get a quad kayak. As we headed off into the lake, I hear my name and Jai/Madhur/Armaan are at the beach waving. They get a 2 person rig and head off too. They spend a few minutes circling around because Armaan was on Jai’s lap and I don’t think they were able to row synchronously. Tricia and I have the kids between us and they are thrilled to bits. We start rowing hard but it’s hard to navigate a quad and then you have two kids who have their arms in the water creating drag. It was a lot of fun. We got out of the water in an hour.

After a snack, the Malkanis, Bala-Ahers and we headed over to the park where we had lunch an some cold beer.Deepak played with the kids which they loved. After that Armaan and Arjun took a nap while we chatted. When the kids woke up we went to the beach, which was ok. Very crowded.

The funny thing was that, when it would get hot at the campground, we’d line up under the one tree’s shadow.

Overall we had a lot of fun. I’ll go back to the lake, not the campground

Camping season is here!

10 Jun '10

Summer is here in full swing and we went on our first camping trip of the season. We headed to our old favorite, Memorial Park in Pescadero. Close enough to drive there in a couple of hours, far enough to get away from the city. Make sure you get your reservations well in advance.

It’s a fantastic place for kids and adults alike. Nice bike trails, wading pool and a little beach and even some easy trails. The firewood was a little pricey, so I would bring some along.

Reviews on yelp and the brochure.
